Parent Teacher Organization

The I.C. - St. Joseph Parent Teacher Organization works to improve your child's success in school by strengthening parents' involvement. Please review the activities below for ideas how you could help:
  • Homeroom Parent - call other parents to arrange for holiday treats, enlist volunteer helpers as needed by the teacher.
  • In Class Helper - listen to children read; review flashcards; read to students, help with activities as specified by the teacher
  • Fall & Spring Book Fair - help is needed at both centers for this event which takes place November 10th & 11th and February 22nd & 23rd.
  • Teacher Dinners - Help out with your cash donation, baking something or help serve the meal during conferences on November 11th and February 23rd
  • Lil' Shopper's Shoppe - this is a great way for primary students to get a start on their Christmas shopping
  • General Mills Box Tops for Education - coordinate this fundraiser
  • Magazine Drive - help check orders that come in daily September 13th - 28nd. Volunteers are needed 1 - 1 1/2 hours per day, especially on Mondays, Thursdays, and Fridays
Dear Parents,
We would like to tell you a little about what Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) is and what we do. Another word for Parent Teacher Organization, that you may be more familiar with or that other schools use, is PTA. A parent teacher group working together to give the students, from our school, something extra that the school budget may not be able to provide. Every parent of an I.C. St. Joe's student is a member of the Parent Teacher Organization, and we would strongly encourage you to become active in YOUR organization. There are many ways a parent can help no matter what your work schedules are. The PTO meets once a month in the teacher's lounge at the I.C. building. If you cannot make it to the meetings you can read your school newsletter, which comes home every Thursday, or by simply filling out and returning papers that come home from the PTO. We would love to see new faces at the meetings, and let you see what the PTO is all about. New ideas are always appreciated.

Now a little about what we do. The Parent Teacher Organization handles various fundraisers throughout die year along with support of various activities that goes on. A few of our biggest fund-raisers in the past years have been Winterfest (carnival), UNI Concessions, Club Choice, and Home & Interior candies. These events have raised more than $3000 $7000 each. The Spring Picnic raises funds for the music dept., and we also have book fairs at parent conference times to raise money for books that can go into the school Library or the children's classroom. The Open House at the beginning of the school year starts us off. We also provide other materials for the classrooms that the school budget may not be able to provide. We try to purchase things that the teachers can use in their classrooms (so they don't have to go and purchase themselves) We have asked die teachers to make a wish list for the PTO for ideas we may or may not be able to purchase. From the wish list, we have purchased 12 fans for the classrooms. We put cork stripping into the hallways at Raymond school for ease of hanging your children's works of art. And much needed window blinds were also installed in Raymond. Other places we have chose to put some of the money are Teacher's Retirement and the general school budget. We work closely with the principal to determine where the funds should be spent, always trying to keep in mind where we will benefit our children the most.

On the back page is a summary of our PTO account and the fund-raisers that we organized for the 2003 - 2004 school year.
